Mardi Gras Race Week – Friday Report – Greg Rubin

It appears that our sacrifice to the weather gods was not accepted today. Despite light winds in the morning, by the skipper’s meeting a frontal system had moved through. The winds hit like a wall, going from 2-5 to 25 gusting to 35 in about five minutes. After postponing for three hours, the race committee finally called the days racing at around 2pm.

Later in the day a few brave souls went out for a crash course in the Lake Pontchartrain chop that builds with a strong North wind. Despite the strong winds and five foot swells, no one was hurt. The boats suffered some minor bits breaking. Thanks to some heroic last minute machining and welding by Glen Tonguis everyone will be out sailing in the morning.

The forecast for the rest of the weekend is 10-12 out of the North. We should be able to get in two good days of racing on Saturday and Sunday. Stay tuned to some exciting sailing!
